SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — As advertised, today has been the coldest day of this cold snap and easily the coldest day of the season.

As of 2 pm CST Monday. Note that several of these readings were recorded early in the morning.

We have one more frigid night on the way, and it is going to make its presence known between air temperatures in the double digits below zero and wind chill values falling well into dangerous territories.

An extreme cold warning is in effect near and east of I-29 until 12 pm CST Tuesday. Wind chill values may drop near and below -40 degrees at times, causing frost bite to occur on exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Cold weather advisories cover the rest of KELOLAND for the same time frame East River, with a 9 am CST/8 am MST expiration time on Tuesday if you’re West River. In NW Iowa and along I-90 in SW Minnesota, the cold weather advisory expires at 6 pm CST Monday, with an extreme cold warning taking over from there. Wind chill values may drop to -30 degrees or lower.

Following a frigid start to Tuesday, we’ll have our transition to “milder” temperatures take hold. While East River locations may stay in the teens and 20s, we’ll see 30s come back West River. Those 30s return by Wednesday for everyone and, beyond a small step backward on Thursday, stay with us into Saturday.

Speaking of the midweek outlook, we do have a chance to see some snow showers on Wednesday and into Thursday. Accumulation totals aren’t all that impressive, but keep this in mind if you have travel plans all the same.

Beyond that, chances for appreciable moisture of any variety will be tough to come by.
