SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Hundreds of people will “Go Red for Women” Friday in Sioux Falls.
The American Heart Association gala highlights heart disease in women and raises money for research.
Maria Taylor is one of the organizers of the event.
Proof of rental problems needed to act, officials say
“Just wanted to get involved to advocate, to tell women to listen to their bodies and listen to the signs,” Taylor said.
Taylor knows all about that.
Several years ago, she found out she had a leaking heart valve.
While she was treating the problem, something didn’t seem right.
Her friend encouraged her to get a second opinion.
“I went in and saw another doctor and they said, ‘You need a surgery,'” Taylor said.
Today, Taylor is doing well.
Friday’s event will kick off American Heart Month, which runs through February.
“Really, it simply is about raising awareness. Everyone should know heart disease is the number one killer,” said Chrissy Meyer with the American Heart Association.
Chrissy Meyer with the American Heart Association encourages people to stay on top of their heart health.
“Schedule that appointment with your healthcare provider. Get your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your blood glucose checked and have a conversation about what risk factors you can manage and what risk factors are maybe out of your control,” Meyer said.
And Taylor is helping spread the message.
“If you feel like something is not right, go in and find someone to help you with that,” Taylor said.
Next Friday is National Wear Red Day, a day to raise awareness about heart disease.
