SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been a long, tough battle with breast cancer for Clair Ode.
The Brandon native has endured six rounds of chemo, multiple surgeries and 25 rounds of radiation, but she’s had people by her side every step of the way.
Claire Ode is a mother of three. When her youngest was just four months old, she knew that something was wrong.
“She felt a little off, so she went in, and she ended up being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer,” Claire’s sister-in-law and best friend Kaitlin Ode said.
“It’s a shock when you’re that young, and you have a new baby, and you think life is great, then you all of a sudden have cancer,” Claire’s mother-in-law, Heidi Ode, said.
After rigorous treatment, her cancer is now gone, but the radiation she endured left her skin damaged.

“After numerous surgeries, they realized her skin was not great, and this surgery in New Orleans will be to help build skin, help nerve muscles come back and rebuild muscle. It’s been a long recovery, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Kaitlin Ode said.
To help pay for the surgery, the family held a fundraiser at Shenanigans in Sioux Falls, where there was a walking taco bar, a silent auction and free-will donations.
“That’s part of what Sioux Falls is, right? It’s just a community that always seems like it’s helping each other. We like to be a part of that,” Shenanigans general manager Andy Rose said.
The event is one of the many examples of support that Claire has received.
“This support for Claire is huge. Being so young and being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer with kids under the age of eight, it’s huge. It takes a village,” Kaitlin Ode said.
And Claire has stayed strong through it all .
“The strength that she has had has been inspirational for everyone that she meets,” Heidi Ode said.
Ode’s surgery is scheduled for mid-April in New Orleans. She will have to stay there for ten days to recover.
