SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Rapid City man is facing charges after threatening Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden, Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Tuesday.
24-year-old man arrested for homicide
In a news release, Jackley said 28-year-old Hudson Wheeler was arrested Monday and charged with one felony count of Threatening or Intimidating a Person Holding Statewide Office. The AG’s office says Wheeler was indicted after he made calls to the Governor’s Office where he threatened Gov. Rhoden.
“Disagreement regarding government action or inaction is our right, however, threats of any kind against public officials should not be tolerated,” Jackley said in a news release. “Public officials have a right to safety while conducting their official duties.”
According to court documents, Wheeler was a teacher at South Middle School in Rapid City. He left four different threatening voicemails and when interviewed by authorities, he was “drunk and ranting.”
Wheeler made his first court appearance Tuesday in Pennington County, where he is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond. Wheeler faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
