In a press conference held Friday afternoon, Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden announced 8 more troopers and one sergeant will be added to the highway patrol based in Sioux Falls. The governor says the new additions to the staff will be paid by state highway funds, along with $1 million in one-time funding for the proper new equipment.

The SDHP increase still needs to go through the legislature.

Rhoden says it’s been 25 years since more highway patrol officers were added to Sioux Falls. There are currently 20 highway patrol members in Sioux Falls.

Rhoden was joined by Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken, Sioux Falls Police Department Chief Jon Thum and other law enforcement officials. You can view the full 30-minute news conference below.
