Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Tuesday afternoon, one hiker in the Black Hills stumbled upon what turned out to be human remains
Investigators in this case have been working with other agencies to find the identity of the person.
“Since then we have been in contact with forensic dentistry and conducted an autopsy. And through the autopsy, we are able to confirm that it is an adult person that was found,” PCSO Captain Taylor Sperle said.
While they were able to identify that the remains were an adult, they are still unsure if they were male or female.

This case is being worked jointly between the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the Rapid City Police Department on the individual who was found just south of Hill City. Now they are also looking to local, state and federal resources on missing person cases to see if there is anything they can find to match the identity of this individual.
The person had no identification found on them when authorities arrived.
“Fingerprints or dental records, or DNA that we’re able to obtain and match in the databases are all different routes to go as far as trying to identify someone without having a wallet in their back pocket that tells us who they are,” Sperle said.
This is a developing story, we’ll keep you updated as the sheriff’s office discovers more details.
