SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 2022 cancer diagnosis has changed the way a South Dakota air guardsman lives his life. So, his friends came up with a way to help.
Take it from some of his supporters.
“He wears a smile even though he might not want to smile.”
“He’s one of the best individuals you would ever meet.”
“He’s always been a big supporter for us.”
The person they’re talking about is none other than Chris Thesenvitz: a dedicated and selfless father, husband, friend and air guardsman.
“He’s a lot more involved in every bit of maintenance constantly. So, you’re working with him every day in and out,” one of Chris’s co-workers, Dan Deweerd, said.

Anyone visiting the Sioux Falls Military Heritage Alliance on Saturday night knew it was a challenge to find an open seat, let alone room to stand. That’s because of the overwhelming support for Chris that packed the building.
“We opened the doors a little bit early at 5:00, and the place is packed already,” organizer Ned Hodgson said.
Even Chris himself, couldn’t believe his eyes.
“The number of people is wild. I can’t be more appreciative of all the people that put it on and got the word out,” Chris Thesenvitz said.
From silent auctions to live music, every dollar supports Chris, his family and the road that lies ahead. Money will go towards ongoing medical costs and at-home renovations for Chris.
“When it’s someone as young as Chris is, it is very hard to see the changes and to see the decline,” Chris’s mother-in-law Jan Mellema said. “But, you just stay positive.”
Chris’s loved ones will say it’s an honor to know and support him. Chris is just as appreciative.
“I will not be able to say thank you to everyone, but if anything, saying it to the camera here today, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, from my family, and God bless,” Chris Thesenvitz said.
Donations are still being accepted for Chris and his family. To do so, you can contact the Alliance at 605-271-1582 or you can call the South Dakota Air National Guard at 605-988-5700.
