WOONSOCKET, S.D. (KELO) — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket made a run to the Class ‘B’ state title game this season for just the third time in history. The Blackhawks were anchored by junior Liz Boschee, who is a finalist for player of the Year.
Boschee first ventured into the game of basketball as way to team up with and play alongside her older sister.
“I only had a couple of years with my sister, so I wanted to just make the most of it,” Boschee said. “And then once she graduated, I love basketball with all my heart, so I just kept putting in the work.”
Initially playing in a supportive role as a middle schooler on varsity, the now junior took advantage of that experience and has garnered a player of the year nomination.
“The confidence definitely grew because I would only get a couple minutes on, and then I’d come off and then I’d go back on,” Boschee said. “So, I always made the most of it when I was on the court.”
Boschee averaged 19.5 points, nearly six rebounds and 3.5 steals per game this season, a true blend of offensive and defensive success.
“She’s got the skills of a guard and a forward and a center now, and she’s got a really a complete game,” Sanborn Central/Woonsocket head coach Rob Baruth said. “Also on the defensive end is where she’s really developed as well as she’s a lot more disciplined defensively. I think that’s the bigger improvement that we’ve seen: her defensive skills.”
She combines a win-at-all-cost mentality on the court with a friendly demeanor off it.
“She just has such a great personality and is a great teammate and just does some great things that the girls really like to be around,” Baruth said. “She just is always smiling. She’s always having a good time, but she’s also got that killer instinct.”
Boschee is third all-time on the school’s career leaderboard for both points and rebounds behind Myah and Shelby Selland.
