SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — If you’re looking to add some exercise to your daily commute, this is National Bike to Work Week.

Your next trip to work could be as easy as riding a bike.

“It’s designed as an introduction to let people know that biking to work is a viable opportunity for them to try something out,” Spoke-N-Sport owner Peter Oien said.

The third week of May is annually recognized as Bike To Work Week.

“I think if you talk to most people who do bike commute, they’ll tell you that it’s the best part of their day is getting on the bike after a tough day at work and heading home on a relaxing, fun mode of transportation,” Oien said.

Peter Oien owns Spoke-N-Sport in Sioux Falls and says the benefits of biking are countless.

“Exercise, stress reduction, and as Sioux Falls continues to get busier and busier, especially if you work in the downtown core, a person on a bike takes up a lot less space than a person in a car,” Oien said.

“I work three 12s, so I do it whenever I have to go to work and on my days off I just ride to the gym, get exercise,” Sioux Falls resident Michael Weig said.

Michael Weig is saving up for a car, but says getting from point A to B on his bike has its perks.

“Just to get outside, enjoy the outdoors, summertime is nice, sometimes the wind’s kind of nasty, but Sioux Falls has nice bike trails,” Weig said.

Oien says the message this week is simple…

“Try it out, you don’t need anything fancy to ride to work,” Oien said.

…and Spoke-N-Sport is always willing to lend a hand.

“If you’re nervous about it, come see us, we’d love to help you find a nice, safe route to work, something where you’re not riding down the sidewalk on Minnesota Avenue or 41st. You can do it, get out there and try it once,” Oien added.

In addition to Bike to Work Week, this Friday is officially Bike to Work Day, while May is National Bike Month.
