SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Even though there are chances for rain in western South Dakota Wednesday evening and Thursday, the dry conditions in western South Dakota will have to be watched as fires can quickly spread.

Humidity values in western South Dakota will be very low Thursday. One computer model is suggesting humidity levels at around 10% Thursday afternoon.

That’s not good news for any rain that develops overhead as a lot of it will most likely evaporate before it hits the ground. In effect, that will cause dry lightning. And lightning is something we don’t need over dry ground.

3 main factors in our possible wildfires in KELOLAND are the strong southerly winds expected through Thursday.

Air temperatures will reach the 90s in central and western South Dakota, and we can’t forget that it was the 4th driest summer on record in Rapid City.

While temperatures will cool a little for this weekend, we still expect mostly dry skies to prevail going into early next week.
