EDGEMONT, S.D. (KELO) — Fire crews were able to hold the fire within the burned area Friday night.
As of Saturday morning, the fire remains at 330 acres in the Black Hills National Forest and is 10% contained, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Black Hills. There were 130 fire personnel from South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Colorado fighting the blaze. Other agencies and volunteer fire departments have been on-site to assist.
Crews will continue securing and building lines while prioritizing firefighter and public safety. Air tankers and aerial support are utilized to assist firefighters on the ground as the terrain is steep and difficult.
No road closures or evacuations have been ordered. Smoke may be visible from Highway 89 and Highway 18.
The fire, caused by lightning, started Thursday afternoon and is located eight miles southeast of Dewey and eight miles northwest of Edgemont in Fall River County.
A public reminder: fires are prohibited in the Black Hills Fire Protection District on National Forest land in South Dakota and also Wyoming (see current fire restriction information), except in designated recreational sites.
