SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — The Mother’s Day rush is in full bloom at greenhouses across KELOLAND. In fact, Lewis Drug calls this their Black Friday of spring.

Christine Brandner of Sioux Falls doesn’t have to drop hints to her family about what she wants for Mother’s Day. She just goes out and buys the flowers herself.

“It’s been a tradition in our house that my boys come over and help me plant whatever I pick out, so that’s part of their Mother’s Day gift so it’s kind of a neat tradition so I get to pick today,” Brandner said.

Mother’s Day is a gold mine for local greenhouses.

“This is our busiest weekend for the garden shop,” Lewis garden shop merchandiser Kim Westall said.

Stephanie Fischer of Sioux Falls is buying flowers for her mother, and herself.

“I like super-bright colors. I feel like some of the big pots like with geraniums and stuff coming out with the reds and the oranges and the pinks are super-pretty,” Fischer said.

Lewis has been receiving regular shipments of flowers and say the selection should be strong going into the weekend. Still, it’s never a good idea to be a last-minute shopper, especially on Mother’s Day.

“I would come and get it while we have it. Because we may run out of a certain flower that you might want and we might have it now and maybe next week, the people we get the flowers from, we may not have any of them,” Westall said.

Row upon row of flowers beaming in brilliant colors provide more than enough incentive for customers to stock up ahead of the holiday. For many families, it just wouldn’t be a Mother’s Day without fresh flowers in the home.

“And they last. A card is nice but a flower lasts all year,” Brandner said.

It takes a long time to prepare for Mother’s Day. Lewis started hiring seasonal staff for its garden shop back in January.
