GARRETSON, S.D (KELO) — After a rainy week, this weekend’s forecast is a welcome sight. The sunshine and warm weather has many across KELOLAND making plans to head outdoors.

Camping slots across state parks are filling up fast.

Here at Palisade State Park, campers from across South Dakota and beyond are pitching their tents and unloading their campers for Mother’s Day weekend.

Alan Gonzales, his wife Silahy and their pets Damon and Abby, drove here from New Jersey. They are making the move to Sioux Falls.

This is the couple’s first time at Palisades.

“It’s really good actually. So nice place, it’s quiet. Actually all of South Dakota is quiet. Has Palisades and a lot of parks,” said Alan Gonzales, camper.

Palisades is a first for many campers. Up the way is the Winter family. They have been enjoying the outdoors since last Friday.

“We’ve been camping. We did Newton Hills before here and then we came here on Tuesday,” said Brant Winter, camper.

The Aberdeen family goes camping every year.

“We try to I just take about a week, week or two off work through that. So we go out for Mother’s Day and our anniversary. They just tie in together,” Winter said.

Parts of Palisades State Park have been under construction for the last three years.

“It’s beautiful. We just did- we just got done doing a pretty long hike. Went through by the water. It’s beautiful place for sure,” Winter said.

The park has added 77 new camping spots as well as an array of new hiking activities.

“Walking around, you can take your time, enjoy the beautiful days and everything. This is a good, good place. You have three trails you can do. Really fun,” Gonzales said.

There will be an open house event on May 17th for all the new attractions at Palisades.
