Butterfly populations disappearing at ‘dire’ rate

A study recently published in the journal Science determined that the butterfly population across the continental U.S. has been dropping at an average rate of 1.3% since the year 2000. The study's authors attributed the use of insecticides, the destruction of ecosystems and a changing climate to population decreases. “Numerous declines have been documented across insect groups, and the potential consequences of insect losses are dire," study authors stated.

State of emergency issued after series of brush fires break out on Long Island

A series of brush fires broke out on Long Island Saturday, fueled by low humidity and gusty winds, sending smoke visible from Connecticut and the tri-state area. While the exact cause remains unclear, authorities quickly mobilized resources to protect structures, and no significant air quality issues were reported as the smoke was carried offshore by northwesterly winds.
