According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a contractor was working on the light pole tower when it began to lean and fell, hitting one passing vehicle. The driver died from the injuries of the crash, which happened at 1:05 p.m. Thursday.

The name is not being released until the family has been notified, officials said.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

The northbound lanes of I-229 near the Benson Road Exit were closed for a period of time Thursday as crews crewed the pole from the interstate.
