SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The hot and windy weather the past few days has improved with the arrival of a cold front. And while we’ll take the good news, hot and dry weather will likely return in the days ahead.

Smoke from the First Thunder Fire created plenty of haze on our Rapid City LIVE camera Wednesday. Scattered areas of rain have delivered higher humidity along with much cooler temperatures.

When does the I-229 and Cliff Avenue project start?

Tuesday marked two days in a row of 100-degree weather. Now that the 100s are out of the picture, the cooler weather will help tame the extreme fire danger, at least for now.

Drought is spreading in western South Dakota. The weekly drought monitor continues to show moderate, severe and extreme drought conditions affecting the Black Hills region. What’s more concerning is the extended forecast.

The latest data shows increasing chances of above-normal temperatures as next week approaches. Dry ground heats up quickly and we think 90s are very likely at the end of the 7-day forecast.

Coming up Thursday, we’ll take a closer look at the weather patterns for next week and why the fire season is far from over in western KELOLAND.
