SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Crews are responding to a wildfire in Union County in southeast South Dakota.

DOGE announces first real estate closure in South Dakota

The Union County Emergency Manager confirmed to KELOLAND News there was a fire north of Spink township and south of Nora.

Homeowners in the area have been notified to be on standby for evacuations.

The Akron, Iowa Fire and Rescue Department is warning drivers to not drive by the fires.

“We need to keep the roads clear for trucks and tankers,” the post said.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office is asking for farmers in the area of 309th Street and 475 Avenue to help disc land around the large fire.

The owner of the Nora Store told KELOLAND News he has been alerted that he may have to evacuate if the fire continues heading that way. He says the fire is about three miles from the store.

The fire has burned a car and come close to a few homes, but crews have been able to save them. As of 5 p.m., six crews are on the scene. Beresford and Vermillion were on the way.

Weather conditions have many counties in southeastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa in a Red Flag Warning with wind gusts up to 50 mph.
