MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — Dell Rapids PBR came from behind to knock off the Platte Killer Tomatoes and win the Class ‘B’ amateur state championship 3-1 at Cadwell Park Sunday.
The game was scoreless through the first six innings before Platte’s Michael Buitenbos knocked in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. Dells answered in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Matt Gillogly tied the game with an RBI single. Then, Riley Calhoon followed with a two-run single of his own.
Drew Sweeter came on in relief and secured the win, his second of the tournament. He tossed 12.1 innings during Dells’ run and batted .450 for the tourney. He was named tournament MVP.
“All the adversity we faced in the state tournament, to be able to come back and in the toughest moment of the season, to get that W, it just means a lot,” Sweeter said.
The title is PBR’s first since 2007. It’s the seventh crown for the program as PBR and 10th overall.
