SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The staff at Dog Days Hotel and Day Camp is grieving with their co-worker, Kayd, after the tragic loss of both of her brothers.

On Monday, the two lost their lives in Centerville shooting. Upon hearing the news, Kayd’s co-workers knew they had to help.

“It was very heartbreaking to hear that there could be such a tragic incident like that to her. And I just feel so, so bad for her family and her having to process losing both of her brothers at one time,” Dog Days manager Alexis Merrill said.

Kayd is taking time away from work to be with her family. Her co-workers aren’t the only ones who miss her though.

Bravo, a chocolate lab, and Kayd have a strong friendship. We tried calling Bravo over several times, bribing him with treats and ‘good dog’ praises, but he just kept waiting for Kayd.

“If your dog has been here in the last year, they have definitely gotten a hug from Kayd. She is so interactive with the dogs, so loving, so patient, so caring,” Dog Days Hotel and Day Camp Owner Nicole Schroeder said.

Family says hospice was a life choice

Staff said Kayd says goodbye to each dog when she leaves for the day. Her dedication to her work family is why staff set up a donation box to support Kayd’s family. Since Thursday, they’ve already raised $300.

“Kayd’s part of the family and we take care of our family around here, and we just want to help out her family and ease that stress as much as we possibly can,” Merrill said.

Dogs Days in Sioux Falls has a donation box inside their front lobby. Donations can also be made via Venmo.

A GoFundMe is being organized by another individual.

J&R Mechanics is taking donations, too. Checks should be made out to Paul Frankus and can be dropped off or mailed to J&R Mechanical at PO Box 814, Tea, SD 57064. Both brothers were former employees.

All donations will go towards helping the family pay for funeral expenses.
