SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Thousands of books were read during the Everybody Reads campaign across Sioux Falls, not only reaching the goal, but exceeding it.

Aviana Lien had a great time reading during March, one book in particular stood out to her.

“It was a fairy book. And it’s about like this girl. She was at her home, and then she, like, ate a lot of candy, and she wished to be a fairy,” Terry Redlin 3rd Grader, Aviana Lien said.

Lien’s classmate Daniel Iraheta ended up reading around 60 books for the month. He likes reading because of how it benefits him.

“So then you’ll know some words and you can get ready for the other grades if they have any of those words,” Terry Redlin 3rd Grader, Daniel Iraheta said.

Terry Redlin Elementary School read over 13,000 books, which is just a few out of the 429,845 books that were read across Sioux Falls for the Everybody Reads campaign.

“We had a lot of students excited about it and ready to participate, and they loved the idea of putting the stickers in the gumball machine and watching that fill up,” Terry Redlin Librarian, Stefanie Hage said.

What’s even more exciting than the books being read in the classroom is the people that it’s benefiting outside of the classroom.

“Reach Literacy is a program/ business within our community that works to support readers. And they support our schools, they support our teachers, they’re open to the public. And it’s a great place where people can go to purchase books, at all different levels and varying interests at reduced costs,” Hage said.

Keeping noses in books, and books in hands.

The original goal for Everybody Reads was 350,000 books, which means they exceeded their goal by nearly 80,000 books.
