Fact-checking Noem book tour that ended abruptly

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — After several controversial appearances, Governor Kristi Noem abruptly canceled at least two national interviews on her book tour. Now that her book, “No Going Back,” has been released, interviewers are asking even more questions about its content.

As with any book tour, Governor Noem did a lot of talking over the past few days as she drummed up publicity to sell the book and vied for a spot as Donald Trump’s Vice Presidential running mate. Some of those comments caught our attention. For instance, on several shows, Noem repeatedly touted her experience. Here is what she said on Nexstar’s News Nation.

“Well, I think you need to remember Margaret, and everybody needs to remember that I’ve worked on Ag policy and federal policy for over 30 years. My time in serving and making policies in this country has been extensive and covered decades,” said Noem.

If Noem is 52 years old that means she was 22 when she was in her words shaping policy, as she told FOX News. Noem’s policial career began 17 years ago when she was elected as a state lawmaker in Pierre. She hit the national stage 13 years ago, when she won a seat in Congress.

Another questionable claim, Noem told interviewers South Dakota’s reservations are a hotbed of activity for the drug cartels.

Noem: “But we have the cartels set up in South Dakota.”

Vargas: “They are set up?”

Noem: “They are set up in South Dakota.”

Vargas: “How do you know that?”

Noem: “Because I’ve seen the pictures, and our investigators have interacted with them.”

Tribal Presidents strongly deny this allegation. One tribal leader called it fear-based politics. Both the South Dakota U.S. Attorney’s Office and the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office failed to confirm the cartels are active in South Dakota.

In a story about meeting North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, that was deleted from her book after doubts about its validity, Noem also claimed to be a children’s pastor. The final line says “I’d been a children’s pastor, after all”

“I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all),” excerpt from No Going Back.

In the vast majority of instances, a pastor is someone who is ordained or has gone to divinity or Bible school. However, a person who attended the same church as Noem tells us she was very active in the children’s program and took a leadership role along with her sister.

Also, in her book, Noem said impeached South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was reading an article on his phone when he hit and killed Joe Boever with his car near Highmore in 2020. But the investigation came up with a different conclusion.

“All evidence indicates to us that the attorney general was not on his phone at the time of the accident,” Hyde County State’s Attorney Emily Sovell said.

The book tour appears to be over more quickly than originally planned. A scheduled appearance on CNN was in their words “abruptly canceled” last night. Fox also reports Noem has canceled an appearance with that Network.

According to FOX and other media, Noem’s staff blamed the weather for those last-minute cancellations. This morning she posted on “x” about snow and thunderstorms in South Dakota… saying she’s monitoring the situation and will be ready to respond.

But, if you look closely, when this was posted the graphic and radar were already more than 24 hours old.

This afternoon she went back online to give people an update on the weather in South Dakota.
