FBI arrest South Dakota man for Jan. 6 assault at U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO) – A South Dakota man was arrested Thursday, May 9, 2024 in South Dakota by the FBI for assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol.

Darrell Goins, of Newell, S.D. is charged with six felony offenses. According to U.S. Department of Justice Goins’ actions and others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress while they counted and assured the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

42-years-old Goins has been charged with: civil disorder; assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon; assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers; and entering and remaining, disorderly or disruptive conduct and act of physical violence in a restricted building or grounds using a dangerous weapon.

Goins is also charged with two misdemeanor offenses of disorderly or disruptive conduct and act of physical violence in a Capitol building or grounds and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

Goins made his initial appearance in the District of South Dakota Friday.

Since January 6, 2021, 1,424 individuals have been charged in almost all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol. This includes more than 500 people charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing.
