Hawarden power off in areas; water/sewer plant off; travel not advised

HAWARDEN, IOWA (KELO) — Power to the Hawarden water/sewer plant has been shut off, and the city has shut off power to other areas, according to the City of Hawarden.

According to a statement issued Saturday at 11:30 a.m., officials are urging people in the area not to drink the water and not to use the bathrooms. Residents are asked not to drain sump pumps into city drains or in the streets.

The river is expected to crest at 39.1 feet around 1:00 p.m. Saturday. As precautions, the city has shut off power west of Hwy 10 N.

West Sioux High School has been set up as a temporary shelter for those evacuated from their homes.
