SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The SDSU women’s basketball team won its 12th Summit League Tournament championship in the last 17 years with a 84-68 win over Oral Roberts Sunday afternoon at the Premier Center.
The Jackrabbits scored 11 of the game’s first 13 points. Haleigh Timmer scored 10 first-quarter points including the Jacks’ first eight as the lead reached 12 in the final minute of the quarter.
The Golden Eagles scored 11 straight in the second quarter to take a 23-21 lead midway through the period. The Jacks countered with a 14-7 spurt to close the half to take 10-point lead into the locker room. Brooklyn Meyer attempted her first shot with 35 seconds left in the half.
Back-to-back three pointers from Madison Mathiowetz and Paige Meyer to start the third pushed the advantage to 16. ORU tightened the gap to five late in the period, but the Jacks scored the final five of the quarter to make it 65-55 heading into the fourth.
A trio of Jacks reached the 20-point plateau. Paige Meyer led the way with 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Timmer had 21 on 7-for-12 shooting. Mathiowetz chipped in 20 points.
Taleyah Jones and Emily Robinson led ORU with 17 points apiece.
SDSU lead for all but 17 seconds of the game.
South Dakota State will now head to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in 17 seasons. The Jackrabbits will learn their draw on Selection Sunday, next Sunday at 7 p.m. CT.
