SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — More than 106,000 people are food insecure in South Dakota, according to a study by Feeding America.

Right now, hunger is in the spotlight during Hunger Action Month.

Volunteers were busy at Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls Tuesday packing food for the non-profit’s backpack program.

“They’re bags of food that will be delivered to students in and around Sioux Falls and then teachers will discreetly put them in their backpacks for a little extra sustenance during the weekend,” Feeding SD Eastern Volunteer Coordinator Alyssa Albrecht said.

Lending a helping hand isn’t the only way to get involved during Hunger Action Month.

Feeding South Dakota also encourages people to hold food and help raise money.

“During the month of September our board has contributed a match which will help stretch dollars even further, so now for every dollar raised it provides six meals to those who are facing hunger in our state,” Feeding SD Community Engagement Manager Jennifer Stensaas said.

Whether you’re donating your time, food, or money, it all adds up in the fight against hunger.

“It really takes a team to tackle food insecurity,” Albrecht said.

“It’s such a basic need, providing food assistance, that it just makes sense for everyone to come together as a community and do what we can do to help those who are facing hunger in our communities,” Stensaas said.
