SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We are all familiar with wind chills in KELOLAND and how dangerously cold it can get at times. But the way we describe the cold will differ from what we are used to in the days ahead.
Gone are the days of wind chill advisories and wind chill warnings in KELOLAND. Now, if wind chills or “feels-like” temperatures start dropping into the minus 20s, you’ll start hearing about cold weather advisories.

These conditions can result in frostbite on exposed skin in under 30 minutes. Sometimes we can reach these levels with just a slight amount of wind. The intent of the cold air advisory is to catch situations where it could be bitterly cold with light winds.
Don’t worry, the wind will be more than enough to contribute to the wind chills this weekend.
We also may have situations where an extreme cold warning is issued, replacing the old wind chill warning. Those are situations where life-threatening cold is occurring with wind chills typically below minus 35. Frostbite can happen in 5 minutes or less in these situations.
The bottom line is, pay attention to the temperatures and wind chills as the coldest air of the season arrives in KELOLAND.
