SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The live music is flowing again at Levitt at the Falls in downtown Sioux Falls.

The venue opened its 2024 season over the weekend.

About 850 people showed up for opening night despite the rainy weather.

Saturday brought a much bigger crowd.

About 6,500 people packed the Levitt lawn to hear the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience.

That’s one of the biggest turnouts on record for Levitt at the Falls since opening in 2019.

“Partly it was I think people were ready to be out. The weather was gorgeous, but a big part of it I think was Shaun Johnson. He has such a huge following here,” Levitt at the Falls executive director Nancy Halverson said.

The impact of the free concerts spills beyond the entertainment space.

Scott Heckel is the co-owner and CEO of Severance Brewing Company, which is close to the Levitt shell.

He says the Levitt helps draw attention to businesses in the area.

“It’s nice to get people down here. It’s surprising after five years of being in the Cascade that there’s still a lot of folks that don’t know we’re down here or other businesses are down here, so nice to get some additional folks down,” Halverson said.

With a whole summer of music left in the season, perhaps more new faces will explore the area.

“We work for months getting all of this together, and then when people show up for the party, it’s just the best,” Halverson said.

Moving forward, concerts will be on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

In September, shows will run Fridays and Saturdays through the middle of the month.
