SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — McCook Lake is one of the hardest hit areas in South Dakota.Wednesday night, we’re hearing from homeowners who have lost just about everything and don’t know where to turn for help.

First, here’s a closer look at what led up to the destruction.

McCook Lake is located just west of Interstate 29 and the Big Sioux River, and just northwest of North Sioux City.

What’s in the flood waters?

According to a DOT news release, the state shut down this stretch of the interstate at 6 on Sunday evening.

Crews were brought in to build a berm across the interstate at exit 4. That all happened just an hour before the state said the Big Sioux River was going to crest.

Instead, water levels rose for several hours.

Vermillion River is flooding homes and farmland

At 6 p.m. the gauge in north Sioux City said the river was 27 feet deep.

By 10:15 Sunday night, the Big Sioux was nearly 45 feet deep.

And this is what people were dealing with on McCook Lake.

Homes had washed away and there were massive holes in the ground. Wednesday night, the water is going down, but frustrations are growing.
