SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)–It should be a great weather weekend across KELOLAND for the many people visiting the gravesite of loved ones this memorial day weekend, often to plant or drop off flowers. Just how busy this holiday weekend can be at local greenhouses in tonight’s Your Money Matters.

“Lots and lots of people remember all of the people we’ve lost,” Cliff Avenue Greenhouse co-owner Heidi Teal said.

For many people, that means stopping by the site themselves.

“My mom just passed away not to long ago, so we do need to go out and visit the gravesite there,” Sue Etten said.

But for those who can’t make it out to their loved ones gravesite this Memorial Day weekend, Cliff Avenue Greenhouse has a program designed to help.

“We’ve been doing that for many, many years, a lot of people who have gotten elderly they can’t do that or they’ve moved away, so they call up our other store and set something up and the two days before Memorial Day weekend we start planting them,” Teal said.

While many people will be bringing flowers out to the cemetery this weekend, for others this weekend is also a chance to just spend some time out in the garden.

Memorial Day travel expected to be up over 2023

“Using the long weekend is really a good start because it gives us more time to put all of our stuff out and work through it,” Lary Etten said.

The Ettens say they always wait until the last weekend of May just to avoid the risk of colder weather, but Cliff Avenue greenhouse owner Heidi Teal says this season started off early.

“It really jump started the week before Mothers Day because it was so nice out, people doing their pots so that if they weather did change, they could get them inside,” Teal said.

Then this Mother’s Day weekend was one of the busiest days the greenhouse has every seen.

“The lines were like they used to be in the old days, clear to the greenhouse and clear to the nursery, took six or eight of us just to run the cash registers, so it was really busy,” Teal said.

But they still expect plenty of people to be in shopping for flowers and vegetables this Memorial Day weekend when many people feel more secure in summer sticking around.

“It’s South Dakota, it could snow, sleet or hail, who knows, so we usually wait until the end of May to begin putting our outdoor flowers out,” Lary Etten said.

Cliff Avenue Greenhouse will be closed on Memorial Day, so if you’re still looking for flowers for your own home or to take to a loved one’s grave, make sure to stop by the greenhouse before the Memorial Day holiday.
