SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A movie with a South Dakota connection is set to hit theaters soon.

The movie is called Lost on a Mountain in Maine.
It’s based is based on a true story.

“It’s set in 1939, and it’s about a 12-year-old boy who gets lost on a huge mountain in northern Maine and he survives over 10 days and he crosses over 80 miles barefoot,” Director Andrew Kightlinger said.
Kightlinger lives in Los Angeles now, but he got his start in filmmaking in South Dakota.
“I started making home movies with my friends in high school. When I was at Augie, even though I was studying government and French, I was involved in the theater program, improv comedy, I was making films as well for the college. And then eventually, I made two micro-budget movies that were completely made in South Dakota,” Kightlinger said.
Back in 2013, KELOLAND News spoke to Kightlinger about one of those films, Dust of War.
“The best way to describe it is Star Wars on the Prairie. That’s what I like to tell people and that’s kind of what we’re going for,” Kightlinger told KELOLAND News in 2013.
Lost on a Mountain in Maine, which was produced by Sylvester Stallone, is Kightlinger’s biggest film yet.
The PG-rated movie opens in theaters across the country on November 1st.
“This movie has values that are very South Dakotan. Faith, family, community, hope, and I think that people will go to this and see our state in it and because I learned about all those values growing up here,” Kightlinger said.
The movie will shown in several South Dakota theaters.
