Name released in deadly McCook County crash

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The name of a man who died from injuries sustained from a crash on September 19 has been released.

In a press release from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a crash in McCook County led to the death of one man and the serious injuries of his passenger.

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2022 GMC Yukon was traveling westbound on Highway 42 near the intersection of 451st Avenue. A 2002 Ford Ranger, driven by Billy Joe Poppenga, was headed southbound on 451st Avenue and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection.

Upon entering the intersection, the two vehicles collided.

The people in the Yukon sustained minor injuries. Billy Joe Poppenga sustained life-threatening injuries and died on October 1. His passenger received serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
