SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 19-year-old Pine Ridge man is facing serious charges tonight in the shooting death of his girlfriend. It’s a criminal case we’ve been following since last August.

It started in tribal court, but according to newly unsealed court documents, the defendant now faces charges in federal court.

A criminal complaint has been filed against 19-year-old McKenzie Big Crow charging him with second-degree murder, discharge of a firearm in a crime of violence, possession of an unregistered firearm and violating the unborn victims of violence act.

30-year-old faces murder charges in deadliest Sioux Falls homicide since 1973

Big Crow is accused of the shooting death of 19-year-old Ashton Provost and their unborn child back in August of last year.

Their graves sit atop of a hill on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

KELOLAND News talked to Provost’s mother earlier this year, when a crowd had gathered outside the Oglala Sioux Tribe Justice Center to show their support for Provost and her unborn child.

She told us she wants justice to be served.

“I ask all of you, put yourselves in my shoes for a minute,” Lorilei Janis said to the people gathered. “How would you feel and what would you do? I just want justice for my kid.”

KELOLAND News also talked with Big Crow’s father, who doesn’t believe his son intentionally shot Provost.

“No way he murdered her,” the defendant’s father Francis Jamie Big Crow said. “He did not murder her. It was an accident.”

But Janis doesn’t believe it was an accident given their history.

“When Ashton and McKenzie had gotten into an argument here, one of my daughters did, my youngest daughter did address him and tried to fight him because he was being abusive to Ashton,” Janis said. “Well, when he came out here, he fired off his gun and drove off.”

Big Crow’s trial date is set for August 13th of this year.
