SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The “400 richest people in America” list that Forbes Magazine makes every year has been released for 2024. No South Dakotans made the cut this time.

The last few years, South Dakota’s richest man, T. Denny Sanford, would appear on the list. However, his $2.1 billion net worth wasn’t enough to make the list this year. As of October 1, Sanford is ranked #1545 for billionaires in the world.

The top three richest people in America are Elon Musk with a net worth of $244 billion, Jeff Bezos with a net worth of $197 billion and Mark Zuckerberg with a $181 billion net worth.

The last person on the list, Frank VanderSloot from Idaho, has a net worth of $3.3 billion.

A few billionaires from surrounding states did end up making the list.

Warren Buffet, from Nebraska, is ranked fifth on the Forbes 400 list. He has a net worth of $150 billion and owns companies like Geico insurance, battery maker Duracell and fast food restaurant Dairy Queen.

From Iowa, Harry Stine and his family have a net worth of $10.2 billion dollars. Stine is #98 on the list and the richest person from Iowa in 2024. He made his fortune through agriculture and licensing crop genetics.

Three people from Wyoming made the list including John Mars, the owner of Mars Candy. Mars’ net worth is $47.6 billion and he ranks 19th on the list. Christy Walton is at number 48 with her $16.4 billion. She gained her fortune by marrying into the family that owns Walmart. J. Joe Ricketts comes in at number 349 with $3.7 billion. He made a career in online stock trading.

Nobody from Minnesota or North Dakota made it on the list this year either.
