SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Washington Pavilion kicks off its new Broadway series Thursday night.

The first musical in the lineup features a well-known green ogre.

On Thursday, crews were setting the stage for Shrek the Musical.

“Who doesn’t need a little joyful comedy right now?” Pavilion Assistant Director of Performances Bob Wendland said.

The show runs through Saturday with four performances.

“If you think you’ve seen Shrek before, either the movie or the original Broadway show, you’re in for a treat because the writers of the show, the Shrek musical actually went back to the drawing board and kind of rearranged some things, so this is a new, exciting, imaginative version,” Wendland said.

The musical won’t be the only draw at the Washington Pavilion this week.

Saturday will be full of Spooky Science activities.

“We’ll have women in science and they’re doing a potion lab, so they’ll do shows and you’ll get to experience all the fun parts of chemistry and how it relates to Halloween and spooky science. We’ll also have robots. The South Dakota Ghostbusters will be here,” Pavilion Director of Education and Museums Maddy Grogan said.

From ghostly decorations to the green ogre, there’s a lot of entertainment for families.

“I love when we get to launch the season with a family show. This is the perfect Broadway musical for anyone and everyone,” Wendland said.

Wendland says Shrek tickets are still available.

Other musicals in the series include Hadestown and Chicago.
