People fill downtown SF for Native American Day Parade

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — People lined the streets for Sioux Falls’ 7th annual Native American Day parade.

“There wasn’t ever any kind of celebrations or events or anything for Native Americans. And that was to our goal basically was to have something here for us and being able to show the youth, you know, that we’re able to celebrate one another and in a positive way and just keep moving forward,” parade committee member, Shaina Yellowback said.

The Sioux Falls parade draws people from all over.

“We have someone coming up from Nebraska. We have people coming from Sisseton, Flandreau, Rosebud, Crow Creek, Yankton, it’s amazing to see how many people do come and travel to Sioux Falls just for this parade here,” Yellowback said.

“To see the natives and to see all the different floats, family members,” Bryan Joseph & Hannah Hare said.

South Dakota prepares to celebrate Native Americans’ Day

“Just support Native American Day, the culture and the area,” Alex Andersen said.

While it’s a day to celebrate Native American culture and history, organizers say everyone is welcome.

“We just appreciate the support. You know, come out, come enjoy the day with us. It’s not just for natives, it’s for everybody,” Yellowback said.

There were around 40 floats in the parade.

Following the parade, there was a feast at noon, and a calling of dancers at 1.
