“I wanna give a big shoutout to my teammates because they’re the ones passing me the ball to even score the ball and all the rebounding. We’re all playing defense to get it down to the other end,” Pine Ridge Junior Marvin Richard III said.
“Everything’s by example, he’s not just talking the talk, he’s walking it. He’s getting good grades, he’s pushing himself in the weight room, staying after and getting extra shots. You know, driving for morning shooting everyday of the week and you know, he lives out of town,” Thorpes Head Coach Casey Means said.
Richard has had a passion for basketball since he was 2 years old and just wants to win.
“And ever since then I just knew I was going to love it forever. And honestly, I’ve never had a bad time with basketball and anytime I pick up the ball it brings peace to me,” Richard said.

This record was set back in 2001 at 60 points by Josh Mueller of West Central and tied by Alejandro Rama of Mahpiya Luta in 2019.
“Working things out for him so he can get us to win, you know it’s always about winning for him. Even when we lose, we don’t lose. It’s a lesson because he’s right back at it studying how to get better. What did I do in this game and how can I translate it to the next game,” Means said.
Richard didn’t know he broke the record until the game was over.
“Be able to have my own record in the state and be remembered for like a long time. You know, or whoever comes next to break it or anything like that. I was honestly just amazed that myself did that,” Richard said.
According to MaxPreps, Richard is currently ranked 13th in the nation in points per game.
The Thorpes have three games remaining as they make their final push toward the State Tournament just a few weeks away.
