VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — The women’s State-U rivalry is set to renew on Saturday as SDSU meets USD for the first time this season.

The Coyotes are now 9-11 on the season, 3-3 in conference play. USD sits fourth in the Summit League standings averaging more than 68 points per contest, powered through senior guard Grace Larkins.

“This year, they’re getting better at kind of playing around her,” SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston said. “And so you’ve got to have the plan to slow her down, but you have to be careful that you don’t create a lot of shots for other people, too, as you try and slow her down.”

USD head coach Carrie Eighmey says she’s seen the electric environment of the State-U rivalry stand out in other sports, and she can only imagine the turnout here at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

“Anytime you get to play at home, there’s an advantage,” USD head coach Carrie Eighmey said. “Obviously, your players practice in the facility all the time. They’re more comfortable shooting here than they probably are at other venues. As I heard it’s always a pretty great turnout. People really show up for this rivalry.”

SDSU visits the SCSC riding a six-game win streak, outscoring opponents by over 10 points a contest.

“They’ve done a great job of building a really, really balanced team, and it makes it difficult to be able to focus on stopping one thing. You’ve got to kind of be able to be solid all the way around and make every single possession tough,” coach Eighmey said.

Though the two teams have met over a hundred times, the back-to-back conference champs know that under a new coaching staff, the Yotes playing style differs in comparison to last year.

“But then having played them in the past, you can always come back and say, hey, in these situations they kind of come back to this or be ready for these changes that they might make,” coach Johnston said. And when you have a new staff, you don’t really know where those pivots will be during games. So that’s always a little bit different.”

The two teams are set to tip-off at 1 p.m. Saturday. You can see highlights on the KELOLAND News at 6 and 10.
