SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A recently divorced man was convicted of First-Degree Burglary and Simple Domestic Violence Thursday after assaulting his ex-wife.

Corey Herman, 44, was found guilty Thursday of First-Degree Burglary and Simple Assault Domestic Violence. Herman refused to leave his ex-wife’s house when asked and assaulted her. The two had been divorced just 19 days before the incident took place.

The victim called 911 and a deputy responded to the residence. The deputy testified that he had to force entry into the home, where Herman had barricaded himself in a room with the victim.

Herman was eventually arrested after being tased after presenting himself as a danger to both the victim and officers.

The victim shared her story with the jury, who subsequently convicted Herman on both counts.

“Leaving an abusive relationship is incredibly difficult, and victims face many barriers—physical, emotional, and psychological,” said Pennington County Deputy State’s Attorney Natalie Gronlund in a press release. Gronlund specializes in domestic violence cases. “The courage this victim demonstrated, not only in escaping the situation but also in standing before a jury to hold her abuser accountable, is remarkable. We hope her story encourages others facing domestic violence to seek help,” she continued.
