SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A national soccer tournament is heading to Sioux Falls this weekend, potentially bringing thousands of people to the city.

Crews were up early this morning at Yankton Trail Park, already preparing for this weekend’s tournament. They’re setting up goals and cutting the grass.

“It’s really cool to have this many teams coming in from all over the place. We usually don’t see teams from like Ohio, Michigan come out here, so it’s pretty awesome,” Jordan Salamido said.

“Today, we were putting all the trailers in place that are going to be serving as the headquarters. They’re also starting to line the fields. They use a special robot that’s already pre-programmed. So you just set it and forget it. But they’re getting all the fields mowed. They’re also getting all the fields line.”

The Midwest Presidents Cup Soccer Tournament is a five day event.

“Friday, Saturday, Sunday will be pool play. That’s where everybody plays within their brackets. Monday will be the semifinal. Monday. Tuesday will be the championship. Tuesday. We have a ton of events that are planned,” Frank Gurnick said.

This is the first time Sioux Falls will hold this tournament, and organizers are expecting a huge turnout.

“Right now we’re told that they’re well over 186 teams. And by the time grandma and grandpa and mom and dad and brothers and sisters and all the official us and all the players, we’re talking six or 7000 people. So, you know, we just have to plan accordingly, make sure everybody knows exactly how many are coming to the closest that we can get and then businesses prepare for that,” Teri Schmidt said.

Following years of planning and an extensive bidding process, athletes from across the Midwest are just days away from competing in Sioux Falls.
