SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A doctor in Nebraska is waiting for his sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter for the death of a Sioux Falls woman.

On Sept. 1 2023, 22-year-old Anna Bosma and her boyfriend Will were in a car in Omaha when they were hit by another car driven by Mark Carlson, who was a local doctor.

Allyson Gage and Anna Bosma had been friends since they were kids.

“The whole trial was hard. It kept feeling like we relived the entire thing, like over and over again,” Allyson said.

“He was going 106 mph down the street and just made a decision, ending up hitting a light pole and killing Anna. So it’s mostly road rage, which is the part that he could have chosen not to do,” Allyson said.

The defense argued Carlson had fainted, and blamed the car for the crash.

“There was just lots of different reasons behind why it wasn’t his fault when all he had to do was admit responsibility for his part in it,” Amy Gage said.During the trial, the Gage family and others supported the Bosma family by holding beaded bumble bees, organized by Breanna McDaniel.

“Constant remembrance and love for the life that we lost. But we can’t overshadow the loss with how beautiful and wonderful of a person she was,” Amy said.

Allyson’s mom Amy Gage thought of Anna as one of her own children.

“She just illuminated light and love. And she had this beautiful, Disney princess, airy voice and a contagious giggle,” Amy said.

Since her passing, the Gage family has kept Anna’s spirit alive.”We did a balloon launch. Launched balloons and wrote her goodbye letters on the balloons and sent them up,” Allyson said. “And we released butterflies in a Giant Circle playing our favorite song that me and Anna used to listen to, which was Teenage Dream.””The the biggest joy I had from all of the, the trauma is that every single person who talked about Anna said, Anna was my best friend. And that is a testament to the amount of love that she poured so willingly into every single person she met,” Amy said.

In a statement on Facebook Anna’s mother Abby Bosma expressed her thanks for support saying in part, “Thank you to all of our friends and family, all of those who love Anna with us, for overwhelming us with love and support. We couldn’t have gotten through this without you….we really want to thank the members of the jury. Thank you for justice. Thank you for standing up for Anna and Will.”Carlson’s sentencing is set for May 22nd in Douglas County, Nebraska.
