SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Wednesday’s break from the rain allowed for a good day of volunteer projects in the Whittier Neighborhood of Sioux Falls.

This is the second year Habitat for Humanity has helped revitalize the Whittier Neighborhood with a Rock the Block volunteer week.

“Rock the Block is an extension of our Neighborhood Revitalization Program at Habitat for Humanity,” Marcus Brandenburg, the Neighborhood Revitalization Coordinator, said. “So we are just helping residents within the Whittier Neighborhood do small, home repair projects.”

When we caught up with the group they were at Megan Nolan’s house painting and laying down mulch.

“It’s really appreciated,” Nolan said. “We definitely have loved the people that have come to help and what not. It’s all hard work, for sure, that I can’t really do myself so it’s nice to have people step up and take care of it and whatnot.”

The volunteer projects started Tuesday and will go through Friday, weather permitting. Crews are also planting trees.

“So we came into this neighborhood just to help beautify the neighborhood and just show them that we see you, we love you, we’re here for you to help you out with any projects you got,” Brandenburg said.

To celebrate the week of work, there will be a block party on Saturday.

“We have food trucks and we have inflatables for the kids. We got a bunch of vendors come in and resources throughout the community,” Brandenburg said. “So we encourage everybody to come on down if you live in the Whittier Neighborhood.”

The block party is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Meldrum Park.

Brandenburg says they don’t need any more volunteers for this week, but they are always looking for more help in the future. b
