Road, business closures due to rain

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The excessive rain and flooding in southeast South Dakota has caused multiple businesses, roads and events to close down for Friday, June 21.

Road Closures

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising no travel on all state highways in southeast South Dakota that are experiencing flooding.

“Interstate 90 is currently open but is anticipated to close this evening as the weather system becomes stronger and rainfall increases,” the SDDOT said. “Areas on I-90 near Salem and Mt. Vernon are significantly impacted by flooding conditions.”

Sioux Falls Streets

At 1:34 p.m., the City of Sioux Falls issued a transit alert and closed down 41st west of Cliff Avenue near Interstate 229 and 43rd Street at Louise Avenue.

As of 10:20 a.m. 12th street between Sertoma and LaMesa avenues and Madison Street at LaMesa Avenue is closed.

Lincoln County

Harold Timmerman, the Lincoln County Emergency Manager, told KELOLAND News they are advising no travel until the rain stops.

“Until we get through the next round of rain we are advising no travel if you don’t have to,” Timmerman said.

Turner County

The Turner County Sheriff’s Office has issued a no travel advised.

“We’ve gotten up to 5 in of rain in the last 24 hours,” the sheriff’s office Facebook said. “Many roads in Turner County are flooded. Well crews are attempting to mark each and every place the water has crossed the road. It is going to take some time. If you must go somewhere, be prepared to detour, and do not cross flooded roads.”

Yankton County

The Yankton County Office of Emergency Management announced Friday at 7:00 p.m. that the following roads are closed:

301st St at the James River – Next to Stone Church436th Ave at Jamesville ColonySeveral of the gravel roads along the James River are also closed.

US-18 between I-29 and Iowa State Line

According to South Dakota 511, the interstate is closed on I-29 between mile marker 59 and 64 due to flooding. Consider an alternate route until further notice. The I-29 between Iowa State Line and Sioux Falls has roads closed due to a construction project that has been flooded out.

I-90 near Brandon

South Dakota 511 says travelers can expect flooding westbound until further notice from 3 miles east to 1 mile east of US 81-Exit 364.


Highway 46 eastbound into Wagner is closed due to flooded roads. A preexisting construction project had reduced the road to one lane with a pilot car. The rain has washed out part of the construction project.


According to the Tripp Police Department, several areas in town are flooded, including Main Street and the fairgrounds.

I-90 westbound in Minnesota

Minnesota 511 says I-90 between Luverne and Worthington is closed due to flooding. Choose alternative route.

Rock County, Minnesota

Rock County has declared a state of emergency due to the flooding. There is no travel advised as “most roads in Rock County are underwater,” their Facebook said.

Hawarden, Iowa

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says the Big Sioux River near Hawarden is expected to peak at 36.8 feet by Sunday night. The flood stage for the river is 20.5 feet.

Parks, Businesses, Events

Sioux Falls Parks

The City also said that several parts of the bike trail are also closed due to flooding. Those closures will be marked at the trail barricades.

Cherry Rock Park

Family Park

Farm Field Park

Legacy Park

Pasley Park

Rotary Park

Spencer Park

Tuthill Park

Yankton Trail Park

Sioux Falls Parks and Rec also said all sand volleyball games are canceled tonight due to the weather.

Wild Water West

The waterpark will be closed today due to flooding.

“We will keep everyone notified the more we dig in,” their Facebook said. “We are sorry for this inconvenience and we are working hard to get everything going.”

Huset’s Speedway

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series originally scheduled for Friday at Huset’s will be postponed due to flooding at the Speedway.

Earlier in the day, emergency vehicles including a boat were sent to the Huset’s campground to rescue and evacuate campers. Renner, Brandon, Split Rock, MedStar and Sioux Falls emergency vehicles were on the scene.

Sioux Falls Pools

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation said the pools in Sioux Falls will be closed Friday and will re-open Saturday if the weather permits.
