SDSU improves to 19-0 with five set win over USD

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — The SDSU volleyball team remained the only unbeaten team in the country, following a come from behind win over USD, 3-2.

The Jackrabbits are now 19-0. They’re seeking their win 20 win season since 2007. The win also snapped SDSU’s 18 game losing streak to USD.

THE MATCH

SDSU started the night the exact way they wanted to. The Jackrabbits pulled away in the middle of set one to claim a 25-18 win.

However, USD had a response.

The two teams went back and forth through the second set. There wasn’t any separation until USD scored three straight to build a small 12- lead. SDSU got back within one, but the Coyotes held on for the 25-21 set win.

Set three saw an even start as well, as both teams raced to a 5-5 tie. USD went on a 12-5 run to build a 19-10 lead. SDSU then came storming back. The Jackrabbits used a 10-2 run to close the gap to one, but again, they could get no closer. A service error gave the Coyotes a narrow 25-23 win.

USD was now one set from ending SDSU’s unbeaten season.

Set four was another tight match. USD finally gained some separation late, building a 23-20 lead. SDSU answered with two points, but then a kill by Kylen Sealock put the Coyotes on match point. The Jackrabbits would then scored four straight points, including a pair of set sealing kills by Sylvie Zgonc. State won the set 26-24.

The unbeaten Jackrabbits found their groove once again. The fifth set started fast for SDSU who scored the first three points and eventually built a 9-3 lead. Much like set four, the fifth set ended with a run from Zgonc. She tallied three straight kills to earn the 15-8 win and the 3-2 match win.

THE NUMBERS

Zgonc led all players on Tuesday. She tallied a match high 24 kills, which was nearly 40% of the teams kills. Sydni Schetnan led all blockers with eight blocks.

USD had three players finish with double digit kills. Freshman Lauren Medeck led that department with a team high 20 kills. Amanda Loschen had six blocks to lead the Coyotes.
