SPEARFISH, S.D. (KELO) — The Class ‘A’ girls basketball state championship came down to the final play where Sioux Falls Christian’s Lezlei Setzer putback a missed free throw as time expired to lift the Chargers to a 57-56 win over previously unbeaten Maȟpíya Lúta Saturday night.
The two teams traded blows in the first half. Then in the third quarter, the Crusaders led the whole period before Christian tied the game at 43 heading into the fourth. SFC led almost the entire fourth quarter until Dorthie Mesteth gave Maȟpíya Lúta a one-point lead with 27 seconds left. That set the stage for Setzer in the closing seconds.
Setzer finished with a team-high 14 points. Emory Lems added 12 for SFC. Essence Tobacco paced the Crusaders with 15 points, and Ashlan Carlow-Blount tallied 14.
Both teams wrapped up the season 24-1.
