SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls elementary school has brought in a special guest for its P.E. and dance classes.

Students are spinning with excitement, as their school brings in a break-dancing teacher to their class. Marcus Johnson, with Ultimate Dance & Cheer, was excited to come in to work with the children.

“If someone says, ‘hey, come teach elementary kids,’ I can’t say no to that. So I just love their energy,” breakdancing teacher, Marcus Johnson said.

Marcus has spent the last couple of days teaching the students breakdancing 101.

“I’m actually extremely busy, but I thought it was important to come because I get to see 500 kids, which is, that’s just awesome. So even if a few of them advocate for arts in the future, that would be awesome,” Johnson said.

The children are enjoying having Johnson as a teacher.

Falling victim to fentanyl

“He’s really good breakdancing and stuff, and it’s cool that he’s has the time to do all this and do, like, all the classrooms and stuff,” Eugene Fields Student, Corban Selzler said.

While the students learn different dance moves.

“We made a big circle and then we do what we learned with things that we want to do. And you jump in the circle and then you just like to freeze and like choose a pose and freeze and then we’ll come back,” Eugene Fields Student, Jameson Elms said.

They are also learning skills for outside the dance class.

“I believe that they have shown great courage for trying something new. I think that they have discovered that push-ups are a necessary skill with all of the arm strength that they need,” P.E. and Dance Teacher, Trecia Jacobson said.

As Johnson becomes the type of person he wishes he would’ve had in his life.

“The kid in me wishes someone was like, Hey, instead of math, let’s break dance,” Johnson said.

Johnson has been breakdancing for over 20 years and hopes to inspire the children to support the arts.
