SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The free summer meal program kicks off in the Sioux Falls School District on May 28th.

Kids 18 and younger can eat for free Monday-Friday.

“In the summertime, there’s a lot of time where this may be the only meal some of these kids may be having each day,” SFSD child nutrition coordinator Gay Anderson said.

Lunch will be offered at eight different elementary schools summer. Most will also offer breakfast, including Terry Redlin.

“We just love the fact that it keeps our families connected to our school and it allows them free access to food,” Terry Redlin Elementary School principal Ryan DeGraff said.

The program isn’t just for students in the Sioux Falls School District.

“We also see a lot of day cares that are located close by. We have the Boys and Girls Club just down the street. Often times some of those day care groups do come and use our school for those lunch programs,” DeGraff said.

Initially, the district is planning on serving 150-200 people for lunch per day at each school.

“We’ll plan high in the beginning and then we can adjust our numbers up or down. We’d be thrilled if it was over 200,” Anderson said.

There’s no need to sign up for the program or show any paperwork.

“We’re out to feed and try to provide them healthy meals,” Anderson said.

The program runs until August 9th at most meal sites.
