Silver Mountain Fire 50% contained

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — The Silver Mountain Fire, estimated at 22 acres, is now 50% contained, according to the Silver Mountain Fire 2024 Facebook post.

The fire started earlier Thursday near Highway 16 at MM 55 west of Rockerville in the Black Hills.

Firefighters have been working along the fire perimeter to secure the edge along this steep and rocky terrain.

Aircraft assisting included an air attack platform, two single engine air tankers, one Type 3 helicopter one Type 1 helicopter and two large air tankers.

Traffic was being shut down earlier Thursday to fire traffic only on Silver Mountain Road.

No structures are threatened but deputies will be starting notifications to area residents, according to a post on X from the Pennington County Sheriff’s office.

The smoke from the fire is visible in the KELOLAND Rapid City Live Cam.

An official Evacuation Warning Area has been established in the area around Silver Mountain Road. Pennington County officials want people to check the Public Safety Hub website for updates.

Officials say drivers should expect expect delays in the area and reduced lanes on Highway 16. They are warning motorists to slow down in this area but not to stop along the highway.

Critical fire conditions are expected Friday and Saturday. With the drought, low humidity, and strong winds a fire can spread quickly.
