RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Upperclassmen from St. Thomas More High School went through mock interviews to prepare them for life after school.

More than 75 students participated in mock interviews, with each one getting to identify three career fields they are interested in.

“We as a committee matched their choices with individuals in our community that are working in those fields. Most often the students have their first choice and they will be interviewing with volunteers in our community,” Committee Member Lynn Eckrich said.

25 community members from different fields volunteered their time to interview the students.

“In the 20 minutes, you have to start off and you walk in with a nice greeting, you want to be confident. Start off with a handshake, that’s the most important part. First impressions can be made in 10 seconds and you really want to nail that first impression. And then after that, it’s sitting down and staying confident,” STM senior Gabriel Reeve said.

Students have been working on real-life skills to prepare for today.

“They’ve been working with our English teachers in class to put together a resume, they ask for letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent. And then we’ve worked with them in the classroom to help them go through a mock interview. Basically how to prepare for it, how to dress for it, the importance of making a good impression,” Eckrich said.

“Especially in our generation, a lot of people aren’t that confident and aren’t prepared when they come to certain things. So coming out of a good program and learning how to have formal etiquette, I think is really good for the first impression for interviewing and just for meeting people in general,” STM junior Amity Strand said.

Many students say they enjoyed learning more about what could be their future careers.

This program has been going on for more than 25 years and has helped some students get internships along the way.
