La Niña is still running late, and when it does get here, may not stick around very long. And that could help at least limit one factor that was expected to enhance this year’s hurricane season.
The concept of whether an Atlantic Niña exists is debated within the weather community. This feature is usually less established than the El Niño-Southern Oscillation in the Pacific. Because there is less scientific data available, there are no set criteria for Atlantic Niña events like those established for El Niño, La Niña, or La Nada events in the Pacific.
