Helene disaster exceeds devastation caused by the ‘Great Flood of 1916’ in North Carolina
Flooding produced by Hurricane Helene around Asheville exceeded previous records set by catastrophic flooding in 1916. Within a week-long stretch in 1916, back-to-back hurricanes dropped more than 26 inches of rainfall. The death toll from Helene neared 100 in the Tar Heel State less than a week after the remnants of the hurricane moved through the Appalachians.
